Robot Rock du Jour: LCD Soundsystem - Someone Great (2007)

So, I pretty much avoid big time acts and there are very few "modern" bands that make what I deem to be exceptionally rad music. LCD Soundsystem, however, is the king + queen of them all. I created this stop-motion video as part of my graduate program thesis work. 100 hours of wood cutting and photographing. If you dig it, peep my process photos.

This stop motion animation film uses a very old technique called Strata Cut, but applied to wood. Each frame represents a 1/24" cut, 1,200 cuts in all. Created for Stanford's ARTSTUDIO 167 class taught by John Edmark. Scored to LCD Soundsystem's "Someone Great" as a thank you to the band for writing such wonderful music. Robot Rock du Jour: Units - High Pressure Days (1979)

There is no substitute for the unadulterated, analog muskiness of an über rare, private pressing 7" from a pioneering synthpunk band. These recordings were digitized from near mint copy of this seminal work. Each track is mind-blowing and considerably more raw than the versions found on the 1980 LP, Digital Stimulation. Make sure to check out iNight, too.

Units were a pioneering synthpunk band formed in San Francisco in the late 1970s. This track was taken from the High Pressure Days/Cannibals 7" single released in 1979 as a private pressing. Robot Rock du Jour: Alexander Robotnick - Problèmes D'Amour (1983)

Close your eyes. Picture Rusty Griswold at a topless disco in National Lampoon's European Vacation (1985). Do you hear that song playing in the background? How awesome is it??!! Well, this was the track.

Alexander Robotnick, aka Maurizio Dami, rewrote Italo by attaching a ground wire to Electro and letting the current rip. He also set the bar for performance names. This fellow is a legend who still exercises his servos and gives one hell of a live performance.

Problèmes D'Amour (Ah Ou Ah Version)

The original version of this seminal italo disco track was released in 1983 on Fuzz Dance. This version was released on white label promo and 7" in 1984, with a full promo with great circuit schematics in 1985. The audio was downsampled to 128kbps, per the artist's request.

Problèmes D'Amour (Dub Version)

The original version of this seminal italo disco track was released in 1983 on Fuzz Dance. This mysterious dub version was released on the 2003 LP "The Dark Side of Disco" compilation. The audio was downsampled to 128kbps.

Obsession for the Disco Freaks

"Obsession For The Disco Freaks" is an Electro-High Energy track, Robotnick's ironic tribute to all lovers and vinyl collectors of the 80s Italo High Energy Disco music. Few famous DJs and producers appear on it. It's up to you to identify them
